Looking for a great weekend activity? This weekend, May 7th and 8th, gardeners and horticulture lovers from around the Golden Isles will descend upon St. Simons Island and Sea Island for the 5th annual Tabby & Tillandsia Garden Walk Weekend. Hosted by the Cassina Garden Club of the Golden Isles, the weekend event celebrates the horticultural beauty of the area while offering visitors and locals alike the opportunity to tour a select group of eight exquisite gardens seldom seen by others.
According to the tour website, the garden tour was named after the tabby slave cabins located on historic Gascoigne Bluff and their beautiful natural surroundings, including the Tillandsia or Spanish moss. These cabins are maintained by the Cassina Garden Club, and proceeds from the Garden Walk go towards maintenance of the cabins and the surrounding grounds. Tickets are available in advance for $30.00 and day of the event for $35.00. For more information, please feel free to browse the Cassina Garden Club website.
Founded in 1928, Cassina is the oldest garden club in Glynn County. Founded to “promote the love of gardening among amateurs, to protect native shrubs, trees, flowers and birds, and to encourage beauty,” these guiding principles continue to this day. With more than 130 members, the Cassina Garden Club continues to promote horticulture and beauty throughout the area. As previously mentioned, the club handles the preservation and beautification of the two tabby slave cabins and grounds located on Gascoigne Bluff. This area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and is a wonderful landmark in our area.
